Usmagazine.com has confirmed that Britney Spears has left Promises Malibu Treatment Center
less than 24 hours after checking in and spent early Wednesday afternoon meeting with an attorney.

This is the second time the 25-year-old pop star has re-left rehab in the last week. A rep for Spears couldn’t be reached to comment on why Spears has left.

We spotted Spears earlier today at the law offices of Tarlow & Berk, the high-powered lawyers who represented Mel Gibson in last year’s DUI case. Our source says outside the office Britney was sitting in the passenger’s seat of a blue Mercedes talking intensely on her cell phone while her cousin, Allie Sims, sobbed.

An eyewitness says, “Brit smoked cigarettes and talked on the phone while Allie had tears streaming down her face. Brit just has a blank look on her face.”

At about 2 p.m. PST Usmagazine.com was there as Spears left the law office and was driven down L.A.’s Sunset Strip and taken to the Hotel Bel Air.

A source close to the Spears family tells us that the pop idol’s family is concerned. “Britney has worn the same brown jeans since Sunday, because she has no credit cards or cash. She is basically on the run at
the moment.

On February 15, Spears checked herself into Crossroads Centre — a treatment facility founded by musician Eric Clapton — only to check out the following day.

Extra reports that Spears tried to get into a tattoo parlor before going home but it was closed.

If true, this marks the second time the singer has visited a tattoo parlor in less than a week.

On Friday (after spontaneously shaving her head) she hit Body & Soul Tattoo parlor in Sherman Oaks, California, and got inked with a pink, black and white cross on her hip and pink and red lips on her wrist.

Six months before Anna Nicole Smith’s tragic death, the pregnant TrimSpa spokesmodel reached out via video to fellow pregnant celeb Britney Spears, Us has learned.

In the video, an 8-months-pregnant Smith directly addressed Spears, who was also expecting her second child (their respective babies, Dannielynn and Jayden, were born five days apart in September): “If you see this for some oddball reason – because I look at your stuff, too [referring to Spears’ Web site] – and you want to be friends, I would love so much to hang out with you,” she said. “I think you’re totally cool, and I think we’re about to have babies around the same time…I would just love to meet you.”

Smith finished up with her contact info: “You can call my lawyer, my best friend, my confidant Howard Stern. I think everyone has his number. He’ll give it out to you, Britney. Take cares [sic], and I hope that you do great on your second pregnancy. I’m sure you won’t even see this, but if you do, I’d really love to talk to you. Bye.”

Alas, a Spears source tells Us no meeting ever took place. Says the source, “Britney is so wrapped up in her own world and herself that she just doesn’t care.”

A day after entering Promises, a residential rehab facility in Malibu, Britney Spears has checked out of the treatment center, a source confirms to People.

“It was against their advice,” says the source. “If she comes back for treatment, Promises will have to assess the situation. Sometimes people come back, but it doesn’t look good.”

Promises is not a locked-down facility, so a patient is able to leave the program if he or she wants to.

Entertainment Tonight and TMZ.com were first to report that Spears had left rehab.

For the first time, people who know Britney are speaking on the record about her drug use from as far back as 2003.

“When I was around her, she took Ecstasy,” Amanda Alexander, the sister of Britney’s first husband, Jason, tells In Touch Weekly. Amanda, 21, says she also witnessed the singer using cocaine in their hometown of Kentwood, Louisiana.

Another hometown friend, Kent Smith, who’s known Britney for “at least 10 years,” says he partied with her three years ago at Club 360 in New Orleans. “She does like to party,” Kent tells In Touch. “I’ve been there when she’s done Ecstasy and cocaine.”

Toward the end of her marriage to Kevin Federline, a major stoner, Britney returned to using hardcore drugs.

According to a pal, the couple got into a huge fight on the night of his CD release party last Halloween. “Kevin was mad because he knew she was high on coke,” a source tells In Touch.

“The divorce really threw her into a deep depression,” says a friend. “She felt like a failure and wanted to show everyone how desirable she still is.”

In addition to the cocaine and ecstasy, Spears was also drinking heavily and taking lots of prescription pills, like Paxil (an antidepressant) and Xanax (for anxiety).

Unfortunately, the partying overtook the parenting. “So many people love Britney,” an insider says. “They’re all in crisis mode.” Her mom has resorted to tough love, even taking away her credit cards while her dad, Jamie, a recovering alcoholic, is also “trying to get her on track,” says a pal.

Sources tell ET that Britney Spears left Promises residential treatment center in Malibu, CA early this morning — less than 24 hours after checking into the facility.

Following the news that she was in rehab, her manager Larry Rudolph released a statement Tuesday, saying, “Britney Spears has voluntarily checked herself into an undisclosed rehab facility today. We ask that the media respect her privacy as well as those of her family and friends at this time.”

While Britney Spears is in rehab, her two sons are in good hands. “The kids are being well taken care of,” Spears’s manager, Larry Rudolph, says of Sean Preston, 17 months, and Jayden James, 5 months, in People’s new cover story.

Last month Spears, 25, and estranged husband Kevin Federline, 28, agreed upon a temporary custody arrangement for the boys – Spears has primary custody and can designate someone to look after them in her absence; Federline gets visitation. So even with Spears in a treatment facility, the arrangement would stay “status quo,” says Manhattan divorce attorney Nancy Chemtob.

Federline, meanwhile, has no plans to use the current situation against his soon-to-be ex, says a pal: “It’s not about getting the kids away from Britney. He’s just worried about making sure he can see them.”

Indeed, a source says that days before Spears shaved her head at Esther’s Haircutting Studio in Tarzana, Calif., Federline had urged her to seek treatment.

“Kevin wanted her to get help so she could be a good mother for their kids and not end up dead,” says his friend. “He just couldn’t take it anymore. He was desperate for her to get help.”

And four days after her meltdown at Esther’s, Spears did, in fact, check into rehab. “Britney has a terrific support system and a lot of people who love her,” friend Connie Brabham tells PEOPLE. “We’re all hoping this will work out for everyone.”

As a youngster, Spears had “a terrific relationship” with her mom, says former agent Nancy Carson. But a relative says: “Britney and Lynne have had some problems lately and they weren’t speaking for a while.” Now, though, they’re talking again.

Spears’s little sister cried when she heard about the singer’s meltdown over the weekend, says a friend. The two are tight; Spears calls Jamie Lynn, 15, frequently.

Spears’s dad has had his own battles with alcohol. A family member in Louisiana says Spears doesn’t always stop by his home to say hello when she’s in town, but Sunday night before she entered rehab, the two dined together and had “a heavy conversation.”

The two spoke by phone just before Valentine’s Day, and he canceled plans to go to Las Vegas last weekend “to physically be in L.A. if Britney or the kids needed him,” says a friend.

Her longtime manager parted ways with her after she wed Federline, then returned and orchestrated her well-received behavior when she filed for divorce. He helped with the intervention that led to rehab.

The latest news caps off a wild holiday weekend for the pop star, who shaved her head, got two new tattoos and was spotted partying in West Hollywood over the last several days.

Last week Spears, 25, visited Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Centre in Antigua but left after just one day and headed to Florida, a source told PEOPLE on Friday.

During Britney Spears’s recent wild weekend, her ex, Kevin Federline, canceled plans to party in Las Vegas during the NBA All-Star weekend in order to stay in Los Angeles to be available for the couple’s children, sources tell PEOPLE.

“Kevin is concerned for Britney and his children,” says a friend of Federline’s. “Of course he’s concerned about her. He loves her. He’s always loved her – even after she started divorce proceedings.”

The pair, who split in November, have two sons together, Sean Preston, 1, and Jayden James 5 months.

According to another source, Federline had booked a room from Feb. 14 - 19 at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino, but canceled the reservation.
