During her 14-minute set at the San Diego House of Blues, Spears danced and lip-synched to some of her hits, including “…Baby One More Time” and “Toxic.” This is the first of several performances the pop star is planning this week.

Britney Spears performed live late Tuesday night for the first time in nearly three years with a 14-minute set for screaming fans in San Diego.

After a career break that featured a marriage, two children, divorce and rehab, Spears, in a black wig and white pleated miniskirt, took to the stage at the San Diego House of Blues at about 10:15 p.m.

Security guards rushed to the edge of the stage to hold back the fans. Spears then began her set, lip-syncing her hits “… Baby One More Time,” “Do Somethin’,” “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Breathe on Me” and “Toxic.”

The show featured rapid-fire costume changes, back-up dancers and light and smoke effects. Spears’s Pussycat Dolls-style choreography included plenty of quick, sexy hip-hop moves, head spins, twirls and rump-shaking.

At one point during her performance, Spears pulled one male fan up from the audience and dirty danced around him with her blonde backup dancers.

The mother of Nicolas Cage’s son is reaching out to Britney Spears in the hope of turning the pop superstar into a role model single mother.

Model/actress Christina Fulton is the brains behind the Single Mom clothing line, and prides herself in the knowledge she’s a successful single parent.

As she embarks on a new self-help book for struggling parents and an accompanying Tv reality show about America’s 10 million single mums, Fulton wants to recruit Spears to her army of make-it-happen mothers.

She says, “Britney needs to shape up. She needs to stop being a victim and be victorious.”

Spears recently spent a month in rehab after a series of bizarre late-night club visits left many questioning her state of mind and her parenting skills as a single mother to two babies.

Fulton adds, “No one’s perfect but I do wish Britney would call me. She has just lost her way.

“There’s not someone just saying, ‘Hey…’ She’s not getting the right answers. We’re trying to get a hold of her.

“She has to turn this around and then she could be this great comeback story - a real champion for single moms.”

Britney Spears is making her comeback.

She’s already laid down five songs with songwriter-producer Sean Garrett — responsible for hits by artists such as Chris Brown, Usher and Ciara — and plans to return to the studio with him next week to record three more songs. “She’s back, totally focused on this new endeavor,” Garrett said Tuesday. “She’s worked really hard.

“She’s looking great. This new stuff is going to sound like ‘Toxic’ times 10,” he added, referring to Spears’ 2004 album.

Less certain, however, is when audiences will get a taste of Spears’ new music.

If various celeb-obsessed blogs, Spears-centric chat rooms and paparazzi are to be believed, that could happen as early as this evening. The Internet has been abuzz with talk that the head-shaving pop tart will reportedly perform as a member of the M+M’s, a group that is said to be made up of some of Spears’ backup dancers. The group is scheduled to perform tonight in San Diego and later this week in Anaheim and Los Angeles.

But the rumors remain just that, rumors. Spears isn’t talking. Nor would her publicist, Leslie Sloan Zelnick.

Still, by many accounts, Spears, who has maintained a high profile but has kept her mouth shut since a rehab stint in March, has been working hard to get her act together, even with the media hordes in tow. Most recently, the paparazzi followed her on Saturday to the recording studio of producer Jonathan “JR” Rotem, with whom Spears has been romantically linked. Rotem is a hit maker who has crafted songs for Rihanna, 50 Cent and even Britney’s ex, Kevin Federline.

Things are obviously hotting up between Britney Spears and her new man - musician Howie Day.

Despite the fact that Howie looks quite normal for one of Brit’s conquests, the pair did meet in rehab.

But they were all smiles at the weekend after a night out at Teddy’s nightclub in LA’s Roosevelt Hotel.
